In five years of living in New York, I have lived in a basement apartment with no windows and an apartment in a fifth floor walkup that people have to walk through to get to the rest of the apartment and the landlord has responded to our requests to replace our dead lightbulbs by handing us a ladder.
Tonight when we told our leasing agent about this, she responded by telling us “you have all these bad apartments now, so that you have good stories for later.”
In late May, I will start moving into a building with an elevator and a real bedroom with windows. This is the universe giving me a solid. Pay your dues kids, live in apartments that will leave you with “stories” and this is what you’ll get.
